On Friday, 4/17/09, US Appeals court in Washington DC ordered the Interior Dept. to cease plans to lease land for drilling in key environmental habitats located in Alaska. They reasoned that the Bush-era plan failed to consider the impact to the ocean, wildlife, and tribal communities. Therefore, the current administration must make further assessments regarding the impact of drilling activities in these areas.

I am a supporter of drilling in Alaska for my country's self-sufficiency. However, such activities must be done only when all impacts - good and bad - are documented. Hopefully, President Obama's administration will take this issue seriously and not sit on it for 4 years. Supporting ourselves is important but so is protecting our environment.
