Welcome to the Earth Chatter Archive page.

Earth Chatter is my personal blog where I write about animal and environmental issues happening throughout the planet. To eliminate congestion and confusion, I created this site to store older posts. In a nut-shell, this is the Earth Chatter Library. Feel free to look around.

2008 Planet Earth Flashback

It's been a while. I finally got this blog looking the way I want and stopped posting. Well now I'm back and hope to continue updating the latest "goings on" with our planet. To start, I want to express my thoughts about some interesting topics from 2008.

A lot has happened in the field of discovery. Despite human kinds negative impact upon our planet, hundreds of new life forms were discovered last year. A multitude (hundreds) of new species were found in the Great Barrier Reef alone. The newly discovered clouded leopard was found in Borneo. A new specie of monkey was discovered in the Amazon. And in Vietnam's Mekong Delta, the following was discovered: a rat specie once thought to be extinct 11 million years ago, the dragon millipede which displays it's poisonous status with a hot pink coloration, and a spider with a foot long leg span. These new forms of life are just the tip of the pencil from what was cataloged last year. It mutilates the mind to think of the many others out there yet to be discovered. This just proves that despite our intrusion, life finds away to thrive.

The auto industry played a big role in the media at the end of the year, especially the Big 3 in the USA. Finally getting the point that this industry is plagued by poor management and low quality production, the Big 3 were hanging by a tread; just inches away from bankruptcy. Personally I felt they should have gone under thus being given the rare commodity of a second chance instead of a band-aid fix costing us tax payers billions. But another thing that disappoints me is the failure to discuss within the car industry and media the need to start making more fuel efficient cars now that are affordable now. Sure there is a trend for "green" "hybrid" cars but who could afford them at the moment. Then there are people talking about new energy cell cars which comes from Sci Fi but that's not going to help now. When are people going to realize that our environmental problems can not be solved with a single fix. We need both a short term "now" fix and long term "near future" fix. For example, make today's cars run more efficiently with the technology we already have now while making the fuel more efficient too. Such an undertaking would take little time to conceive and then we can work on a more permanent future fix.

Lastly, the hot topic of 2008 was global warming. I have to admit that our government was successful in scaring the hell out of us. However, I wonder how many people took the time to research the topic on their own. I did and at the present, I am still unconvinced that global warming is strictly a problem we caused and can thus fix. There is still reputable evidence suggesting our Mother Earth is changing on her own; not solely because of us. Looking at the history of this planet's climate, there is a pattern of global warming that has occured since the beginning of time. It is foolish to not take this fact into consideration. I agree we need to pollute less and protect more but scaring people into acting a certain way without having the facts is foolish.
