Sammy Wilson, Environmental Minister of Northern Ireland, banned an ad promoting energy conservation that has been in circulation in both Britain and Ireland for the past year. Wilson argues that the ad, Act of CO2, which asks people to conserve energy and fossil fuel use, is "an insidious propaganda campaign." He insinuates that the ad focuses on a problem that is out of our hands since global climate is "god-driven" and pretty much not in our control to change. I do agree with Wilson that climate change is out of our hands. I am a believer that the so called global warming scenario is a byproduct of our Mother Earth changing. Research that I've conducted on line shows the history of our planet's climate moving in cycles between global warming and global cooling (i.e. ice age, tropical forest). However, to insinuate that there is no need for human beings to practice conservation of our fossil fuels and energy grids is completely irresponsible and stupid. The pollution we produce cause respiratory problems for all age groups, reduction of open space, and the extinction of hundreds of life forms just to name a few. In addition, I will concede that pollution and lack of conservation practices have contributed to the speed of which our planet's climate has changed.
Politicians like Mr. Wilson who find themselves in a position to both make and promote sound environmental policy much stop wasting time targeting ad campaigns and begin organizing a campaign to promote the conservation of Mother Earth's resources. Because if these people failure to do so, global warming would be the least of our problems when we find ourselves faced with nothing left to provide heat and electricity to our homes, schools and hospitals.
What do you think?
