Kenya's lions to be extinct in two decades

The Kenya Wildlife Service announced today that the lion population could be extinct in two decades.

On average, the lion population has dropped by 100 lions per year since 2002 which had a estimated size of 2.749. Today the lion population comes in at only 2,000. Cattle farmers are the biggest reason behind the decline who kill these beauty creatures out of retaliation for the lions feeding on livestock. Habitat destruction, disease, and increased human populations are also factors.

Paul Udoto, a spokesman for the Kenya Wildlife Service was quoted the following by AP:

"We need to take measures to stabilise that number at 2,000 or increase it," he explained. "Communities are the largest threat to the lions and other cats."

Udoto also stressed the need for education regarding lion behavior and the importance lions serve to Kenya's tourist industry.

Hopefully, the warming issued here will not fall of deaf ears. Lions are vital to the ecosystem as well as Kenya's economy. These majesties of nature should never be allowed to fall to extinction especially as a result of human ignorance.
