Welcome to the Earth Chatter Archive page.

Earth Chatter is my personal blog where I write about animal and environmental issues happening throughout the planet. To eliminate congestion and confusion, I created this site to store older posts. In a nut-shell, this is the Earth Chatter Library. Feel free to look around.

Loggerhead turtles facing great risks

The Associated Press released an article highlighting a report published by biologists warnings of the risks from commercial fishing fleets upon the loggerhead sea turtles.

Basically, loggerheads are being caught up in commercial fishing nets, most at risk are hatch lings. Because the sea turtle is air breathing, the fate is death by drowning. Fisherman argue that they already do a lot to try and protect the sea turtle. This may well be true, however, more action is needed to help prevent the loggerhead, an animal that has roamed the seas for millions of years, from going extinct.

This is a endless debate: balancing our needs as humans and the needs of animals. However, it is our responsibility to do what ever is necessary to help minimize our impact upon Mother Earth. In my opinion, we are failing. But there is still time. Situations such as the loggerhead is a great start toward protecting our planet's creatures. But we can not dwell. We need to act. By working with fisherman who know the seas and biologists, compromising and solutions can be achieved.

The sea turtle is known in many earth-bound religions as a symbol of wisdom. Perhaps we can show it what wisdom the human race can come up with when we put our minds to it.
