Tiger populations dwindling to dangerous low

Back in August of this year I wrote an article about the plight of the lions and how this magnificent animal may become extinct in two decades. Today, just two months later, a new report was posted by the Associated Press about the horrible fact relating to the world tiger population. If action is not taken immediately, this astonishingly beautiful creature may become extinct in the very near future.

Wildlife experts from 20 countries (13 of which tigers are still surviving) gathered in Nepal to discuss strategies to help the tiger's grim plight. Only about 3,500 to 4,000 tigers still exist today, all of which live in the area of Asia. This is down nearly 96% from the start of the 20th century! The chief reason behind the tigers dwindling population is (no surprise) humans and poaching and loss of habitat are the biggest threats to tigers.

It is extremely important for conservations groups such as the World Wildlife Fund, government agencies, and biologists to make suffering populations in wildlife a priority as well as working with local communities to curb and eliminate poaching. If something is not done soon, tigers and lions will become a memory in the wild and only exist in local zoos.

  1. such an alarming news indeed. i agree, environmental and conservation groups worldwide should prioritize the dwindling populations in wildlife before it's too late.
