A U.S.A based conservation group announced today that a brand new sub-specie of monkey was discovered in a remote area of the Amazon. The monkey is a sub-specie of the tamarin monkey and is only about 9 inches tall and weighs less than a 1/2 pound. It was first spotted in 2007 by scientists in the area. This small grayish brown critter has been named the Mura's saddleback tamarin. Further study suggests that this new edition to "known" wildlife is currently being threatened by human encroachment particularly in the form of the creation of a highway and deforestation.
To sum up the significance of this discovery, Fabio Rohe, the lead author of this study, stated: "This discovery should serve as a wake-up call that there is still so much to learn from the world's wild places, yet humans continue to threaten these areas with destruction".
