In a report issued by the World Wildlife Fund, over 350 new species have been discovered in the Eastern Himalayas. This remarkable discovery is the result of extensive research conducted by many organizations over the past decade. Such species cataloged include a flying frog, perhaps the smallest deer yet discovered and a 100 million year old gecko long thought extinct. In all the break down of species found are 244 plants, 16 amphibians, 16 reptiles, 14 fish, 2 birds, 2 mammals, and 60 invertebrates.
Whether you are a supporter of the global warming scenario or not, there is evidence out there suggesting the presence of adverse effects to flora and fauna from climate change. Coupled with humans negative impacts, intentional and unintentional, it is important NOW to increase conservation and habitat protection programs. Despite all of the problems going on in the world, Mother Nature is still flourishing. Instead of bogging down on what ifs, we must demand more education and research into our planet's ecosystem. There is still much to be discovered and we can no longer afford to wait until the fossils are unearthed to learn about what is living amongst us.
